Who you are:
HYAS is looking for a business-oriented Privacy Attorney and Data Protection Officer (DPO) to focus on global privacy laws and compliance. Reporting to the COO, you will manage a comprehensive privacy program that adapts to changes in product offerings, regulations, and global privacy laws. As Privacy Attorney and DPO, you will be a valued partner to your internal stakeholders, work cross-functionally to achieve effective solutions, and become deeply embedded in the business by counseling on privacy and security issues related to HYAS’ use of vendors, sales activities, and employee matters.

 

Job location can be remote in the United States preferred locations N. California, S. California, Denver Colorado, or Austin Texas, but all locations are encouraged to apply.


What you’ll do:
• Provide pragmatic advice to the Executive Leadership Team on the impact of global privacy laws related to proposed operational data uses, product developments, and professional services
• Assist with the growth and maturation of HYAS’ privacy program for compliance with global data privacy and personal information collection rules, regulations, and standards
• Advise prospective clients, active clients, and partners’ privacy-related questions regarding their access and use of HYAS’ products and service deliverables
• Conduct privacy assessments of business initiatives, manage privacy compliance documentation, and support compliance certifications
• Gain a deep functional understanding of HYAS’ data assets and information flows by implementing a data mapping solution and establishing end-to-end privacy policies and procedures
• Support and closely work with the product development and engineering teams, negotiate data privacy and security aspects of contracts, and adapt compliance practices proactively
• Work with HR to conduct intracompany trainings on data privacy compliance, perform data protection impact assessments and transfer impact assessments, and oversee regular internal audits
• Serve as the primary contact for supervisory authorities and data subjects’ data processing inquiries


What you’ll bring:
• J.D. degree from an ABA accredited U.S. law school and bar admission in good standing
• At least 5-7 years’ experience practicing law, with a significant privacy and data protection practice at a law firm or in-house
• Substantive knowledge of and demonstrated expertise in creating and managing compliance processes and policies related to global data protection requirements, including relevant US, EU, and UK laws
• Intellectual curiosity, open-mindedness, and comfortability navigating ambiguity and risk
• Ability to build and implement detailed project plans, manage a diverse and complex workload, and demonstrate analytical and strategic problem-solving skills
• Excellent written/verbal communication, presentation, and negotiation skills
• Highly responsive and service-oriented attitude and the proficiency to organize, prioritize, and manage deadlines while anticipating issues
• High degree of decisiveness, initiative, and business acumen to translate complex legal concepts into practical solutions
• Positive and supportive mentality, good sense of humor, and desire to drive projects to completion
• Flexibility and understanding of a SaaS start-up’s fast-paced, commercially oriented nature
• Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP) accreditation preferred
